At this stage in life children are slowly moving from a position of ‘life is sunshine and flowers’ to a shock reality where people change or significant events happen and children realise life is uncertain, children try to make sense of the world around them and they find themselves struggling to find out who they are within this process and it can be very difficult for all involved.
School and home life can be impacted at this time and it can be confusing, whilst trying to manage a range of emotions & behaviours, children & care givers are often not ready or prepared for this and it can result in anger, rage, sadness, anxiety and withdrawal in children.
I work face to face from my tranquil garden cabin offering individual sessions, to make sure I am the right person for you and your child, I offer a free 20 min phone call to assess your child’s needs, where I will ask some brief questions and allow you to ask me questions to see if we both feel like it the right fit.
Following on from our phone call we will arrange a first initial meet and greet session of 30 mins ( chargeable) to see if your child feels happy and comfortable to continue coming to sessions, following this we will book a full session of 50 mins (standard rate) where we ( myself, you and your child) will go over the contract and an initial assessment & basic information gathering to plan the way forward.
At the end of first 50 min session we can discuss the plan, it should be noted that it takes a long length of time and sessions to build a trusting relationship with a child of this age and this will need to take place before any therapeutic work can be bought into the room, outcomes cannot be predicted or given when working with children and parents should be aware of this before commencing.
Weekly sessions are needed to start with but we can discuss 30 min sessions and the possibility of future fortnightly sessions during our first 50 min session as above.
As a qualified counsellor in schools and colleges I have experience in every day life for young people and how this has changed from “being the best days of our lives” to a more up to date viewpoint of sometimes being horrific, confusing and depressive time managing challenges and feeling like it is an endless loop.
Pressure in school - bullying, fitting in, anxiety, exam pressure, low self-esteem, lessons taught to the majority and not me, body image, social media impact, self- harm, suicidal ideologies, feeling like your always getting it wrong, behaviour issues, to managing chronic illness or significant life events.
Pressure outside of school - peer groups, expectation of friends, substances, risk behaviour, fitting in, having friends, social media, feeling isolated and fear of missing out.
Home life – mis-communication with others at home, mis-understanding of behaviours, confusion and generational gaps in understanding, illness of loved ones & grief and loss of loved ones or pets, changes in home set up, parental divorce or new partners moving in, moving house and financial impacts on the home.
